The carotid arteries, one on each side of the neck, supply the brain. Over time a fatty plaque can build up and narrow them: this is carotid stenosis, and it can raise the risk of stroke. Where it is worthwhile, an operation called an endarterectomy clears the artery by removing that plaque and restores good flow to the brain, which markedly lowers that risk in the patients concerned. It is not the only option: depending on your case a carotid stent or medication alone may be the better answer, and the decision is always made with you. When should carotid stenosis be performed?
The decision is based on the degree of narrowing, the presence of symptoms and the risk of stroke. In general, endarteriectomy is proposed mainly for tight stenosis, especially when they are symptomatic. The final decision is always the responsibility of the specialist, after a complete and personalized assessment.
Surgery, stent or medical treatment: how do you choose?
Endarterectomy, clearing out the artery, is the standard treatment for most suitable patients. A carotid stent is kept for particular situations, notably where surgical risk is high, and in other cases medication alone may be enough. The choice is tailored to your profile at the consultation.
How to prevent a carotid-related stroke?
The prevention of stroke combines control of risk factors (blood pressure, diabetes, tobacco, cholesterol), appropriate medical treatment and, when stenosis is tight, carotid endarteriectomy to remove plaque and restore flow to the brain. The strategy is defined on a case-by-case basis by the specialist.
Is the surgery risky?

What are the warning signs of a stroke?
Weakness or numbness down one side of the body, trouble speaking, loss of vision in one eye, sudden dizziness. These signs, even if they pass off (a TIA, or mini-stroke), mean calling the emergency services at once (in Morocco: 15 or 141). A TIA is an emergency and warrants a carotid assessment quickly, within days.
How do we find a carotid stenosis?
Mainly with a carotid Doppler ultrasound, a simple, painless scan that measures how narrowed the artery is. It may be offered if you have symptoms or cardiovascular risk factors (age, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, cholesterol, known heart or arterial disease).
