A review from a patient of the practice

I felt supported at every step, operated on and followed up in Tangier by Dr Tber. See the full testimonial

Every medical situation is unique and calls for a personal consultation.

Who it is for

Are you in one of these situations??

These are the requests the practice receives most often from abroad.

  • Heart surgery has been advised, but it is not performed in your country, or the wait is too long
  • You have a diagnosis, an angiography or an echocardiogram, and you want a surgeon's opinion before deciding
  • A relative, a parent, an adult child needs a valve, a bypass or aortic surgery
  • You are looking for care in French, close to home, at a cost known in advance
  • You live in Morocco, Europe or elsewhere and want a family member back home to be operated on

How it works from your country?

Six steps, nothing is decided without you

1. You send your tests

By WhatsApp or e-mail: reports, angiography, echocardiogram, current treatments. No travel at this stage.

2. Second opinion and teleconsultation

Dr Tber reads your file and explains, by video consultation, whether surgery is needed, which operation, and what the risks are.

3. Written quote and documents

You receive an all-inclusive quote and the medical certificate needed for your visa application. You decide at your own pace.

4. The journey and your stay

We take care of your journey and your stay: the practice sets the dates with you, helps you arrange your arrival in Tangier and your accommodation, and tells you what to bring. Flight to Casablanca, then the Al Boraq train or a flight to Tangier.

5. Work-up, surgery, recovery

Pre-operative work-up on arrival, surgery at the Riad Marshan Clinic, intensive care then ward. Recovery on site until you are cleared to fly.

6. Return and remote follow-up

You leave with your complete file. Check-ups are done by video consultation, together with your doctor at home.

Which operations are performed?

Five areas, one surgeon

Off-pump coronary bypass

Restoring blood flow to the heart without stopping it, when the coronary arteries are blocked.

Valves and open heart

Repair or replacement of valves, including valves damaged by rheumatic fever.

Aortic surgery

Aortic aneurysm and dissection, thoracic or abdominal.

Carotid surgery

Carotid stenosis, to prevent stroke.

Minimally invasive surgery

Smaller incisions when the case allows, decided in consultation.

The journey

Coming to Tangier, in practice

The points patients ask us about before booking.

  • Visa: no visa for Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Gabon and Togo; e-visa for Guinea, Congo-Brazzaville and Ghana; consular visa for Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mauritania, DR Congo and Nigeria
  • Flights: Royal Air Maroc serves Casablanca from most West and Central African capitals
  • Casablanca to Tangier: Al Boraq train in 2 h 10, one departure per hour, or a domestic flight of just over an hour
  • Length of stay: a few days for a consultation or angiography, three to four weeks for surgery, recovery included
  • Companion: recommended during the stay, tell us from the first exchange
  • Availability: the practice is open 7 days a week, emergencies included
  • Documents: passport, tests and reports, list of treatments, and the practice's quote for the consulate

How much does it cost??

A written quote, before you travel

Foreign patients are not covered by Moroccan health insurance. Before any travel, the practice therefore gives you a written quote covering the hospital stay, the operating theatre, intensive care and the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees. You know what you will pay before boarding the plane.

As an order of magnitude, heart surgery in a private clinic in Morocco ranges from 70,000 to 150,000 dirhams depending on the operation, and a coronary angiography from 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams. The exact amount depends on your file and is confirmed in writing.

Your questions

The answers we give patients who write to us from abroad.

Do I have to come to Tangier for a first opinion?
No. Send your tests by WhatsApp or e-mail: angiography, echocardiogram, reports, list of your treatments. The surgeon reads them and tells you whether surgery is needed, which operation, and at what cost. You only travel if it is worthwhile.
Do I need a visa for Morocco?
It depends on your country. Nationals of Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Togo and Tunisia enter without a visa for stays under 90 days. Guinea, Congo-Brazzaville and Ghana use the online e-visa. Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Mauritania, DR Congo and Nigeria go through the consulate. Check your situation with the Moroccan consulate: we provide the quote and the medical certificate requested in the file.
Who takes care of the journey and the stay?
We take care of it with you. The practice sets the dates according to your file, gives you the documents you need for the visa, helps you arrange your arrival in Tangier and your accommodation during the stay, for you and your companion, then follows you up after you return home. The quote states what is included.
How do I get to Tangier?
Via Casablanca, served by Royal Air Maroc from most West and Central African capitals (about 3 h 30 from Dakar, 4 h 30 from Abidjan). Then the Al Boraq high-speed train, 2 h 10 to Tangier, one departure per hour, or a domestic flight of just over an hour.
How long do I have to stay in Morocco?
Allow one week in hospital for open-heart surgery or a bypass, then two to three weeks of recovery on site before flying home: you do not fly in the ten to fourteen days after heart surgery. In total, plan three to four weeks. For a consultation or an angiography, a few days are enough.
How much does it cost, and how do I pay?
Foreign patients are not covered by the Moroccan CNSS: you receive a written quote before travelling, covering the hospital stay, theatre, intensive care and fees. As an order of magnitude, heart surgery ranges from 70,000 to 150,000 dirhams depending on the procedure, a coronary angiography from 8,000 to 15,000 dirhams. Payment terms are given with the quote.
Who follows me up after I return home?
The surgeon who operated on you. You leave with your report, your prescriptions and instructions for your doctor at home. Check-ups are done by video consultation, and your local cardiologist receives the documents he needs.
Can I come with someone?
Yes, and it is recommended. A relative can accompany you during the stay, at the clinic and during recovery. Tell us from the first exchange so we can organise the visit.
