People rarely see a heart specialist out of curiosity. It is usually breathlessness that has crept in, a pain in the chest, a murmur picked up by the GP, or a test report nobody has explained. The consultation is there first of all to put a name to what is happening. Dr Tber listens, examines your heart and arteries, goes back over your earlier tests, ECG, ultrasound, coronary angiogram or CT scan, then explains where you stand in plain words. In most cases the answer is not surgery: it is treatment, monitoring or one more test. When an operation is genuinely on the table, the surgeon who would carry it out is sitting in front of you, which saves you another appointment and lets you ask your questions at the source. You leave with a written report for your GP.

What is the difference between a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon?
A cardiologist diagnoses and treats heart disease with medication and catheter techniques such as stents. A cardiac surgeon operates, a bypass or a valve replacement for instance. Dr Tber both consults and operates, which removes a middleman when an operation is on the table. For purely medical follow-up over the long term, your own cardiologist stays your main contact, and the report is sent to them.
What should I bring to the consultation?
Your earlier tests, however old: ECG, heart ultrasound, coronary angiogram, CT scan, a recent blood test. Add a written list of your medicines with the doses, and a letter from your GP if you have one. The fuller the file, the fewer tests you have to repeat.
Is it necessary that I be operated?
No, and that is in fact the commonest outcome. Most consultations end in medication, regular monitoring or one further test. Surgery is only chosen when its benefit clearly outweighs its risk, and that decision is made with you, never on your behalf.
Can I come for a second opinion?
Yes, and it is a common and entirely reasonable request once an operation has already been suggested to you. Bring the full file and your other doctor's report. The point is not to contradict anyone, but to give you a second, reasoned reading so you can decide knowing where you stand.
How long to get an appointment?
The usual wait is around 48 hours for a planned consultation. If you have an acute symptom, chest pain that will not go away, sudden breathlessness or feeling faint, do not book an appointment: call the emergency services straight away, on 15 or 141.
