What is cardiopulmonary bypass?
It is a machine that temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs while the surgeon operates on a stopped heart, in a controlled setting. The heart then starts up again at the end of the operation.
How's the first few days after the operation?
The first 24 to 48 hours are spent in intensive care, with chest drains and close monitoring. Getting up and taking your first steps are encouraged from the following days. The length of stay, often around 5 to 7 days, varies with the procedure and your recovery.
Open heart surgery or catheter valve (TAVI)?
For valve disease, the choice between open-heart surgery and a catheter-delivered valve (TAVI) is made case by case, mainly on age, anatomy, any other lesions to treat and general health. TAVI is aimed above all at older patients, while surgery often remains preferred in younger ones; the decision is taken as a team, after the work-up and in a discussion built around your situation.
Mechanical valve or biological valve: which one to choose?
When a valve is too narrowed or leaks too badly to be repaired, it can be replaced with a mechanical or a tissue valve. A mechanical valve lasts a very long time but means anticoagulation for life; a tissue valve usually avoids long-term anticoagulation, but wears out over the years and may need replacing. The choice depends on your age, your way of life and your general health, and we talk it through together before the operation.
What are the risks?
Like any major surgery it carries risks, and how large they are depends on the procedure and on your general health. The pre-operative work-up exists precisely to measure them, anticipate them and bring them down. If an acute symptom appears before or after the operation (chest pain, marked breathlessness, feeling faint), do not wait: contact a doctor or the emergency department without delay.
